Exploring AI and Catholicism - Are They Compatible?
Inspired by a catchy song (AI?) by Peter's Barque titled "Hasn't Changed A Thing" (listen below)

Artificial intelligence, like any human tool, is neither inherently good nor inherently harmful; its moral value depends on how it is used. From a Catholic perspective, AI can be compatible with the faith when it serves the dignity of the human person, supports truth, and strengthens authentic community. The Church has consistently taught that technology is a gift from God when directed toward the common good, and recent Vatican guidance—such as Pope Francis’ messages on artificial intelligence—emphasizes ethical development, transparency, and the primacy of the human person over machines. AI can assist the Church in practical ways: improving communication, supporting catechesis, aiding research, and even helping people pray or study Scripture more effectively.

At the same time, Catholic teaching also urges caution. AI must never replace human conscience, free will, or relational ministry. It must be used responsibly, with respect for privacy, justice, and the vulnerable. When AI is treated as a tool rather than a master—something that can inform but not define our moral decisions—it can serve the mission of the Church rather than hinder it. In this balanced approach, AI and Catholicism are not only compatible but can work together to elevate the human pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty.
